I suspect Rooney should not be a striker.
As everyone might see that Wayne Rooney is just too important to Red Devils. I think Sir Alex Ferguson should pull him back a bit to be the key man midfielder.
The reason I propose Rooney to be a play-maker is simple. He is creative. His work rate is so high. He is strong and fast. His energy is unlimited. If he can partner someone like Essien or Vieira, Man United's midfield can be very solid.
In fact, Rooney already plays a very free role. He goes here and there on the pitch. However, if Ferguson can find someone to help him tackle and get the ball, he can devote all his energy to organising his team during matches.
I'm not sure which defensive midfielder will Fergie sign. I hope he can bring Gattuso to Old Trafford. Gattuso is also a strong man without enormous amount of energy. He not only can help to get the balls for Rooney, but also ease some burdens for Rio's defense line.

This is what I think as well
But, in this stage, put him in the midfield can only be weakened MU's frontline and make Rooney with more yellow cards.
Gattuso, the Italian, would not come to MU at the moment, but Ambrosini have a better chance.
You guys need to update your Lamps&Henry group in Yahoo - the current Leaders don't have Henry in their group for last week!.. cheers
